Effective assessment provides information to improve teaching and learning.
We give our children regular feedback on their learning so that they understand what they need to do to improve. This allows us to create planning with a detailed knowledge of each pupil.  We inform parents at regular intervals throughout the year on their child’s progress so that teachers, children and parents work together to raise standards for all our children.

We expect that assessment will:

  • Enable children to demonstrate what they know, understand, and what they need to do next to improve their work.
  • Allow teachers to plan work that accurately reflects the needs of each child.
  • Provide regular information for parents that enables them to support their child’s learning.
  • Provide the Headteacher with information that allows him/her to make judgements about the effectiveness of the School
Children are continuously assessed at the Priory – teachers monitor work closely and adapt their teaching to ensure the best quality of learning for each individual.

These ongoing assessments are supported by more formal tests too:

  • Nationally (UK) standardised tests in English and maths (Star Assessments) carried out every half term in reading and maths.
  • Termly assessment tests in core and foundation subjects.
  • Cognitive Ability Tests carried out with Year 4 to 6 students to better gauge potential and academic expectations.
  • Phonics Screening for Year 1
This is an assessment of developed abilities in areas known to make a difference to learning and achievement: verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning.
